Here's the French version:
Interview with Aaron Longnion, Refynr.com Creator Here's Q & A of the original interview, in English:
· What gave you the idea for creating Refynr ? Did you create it because you couldn’t find any tool matching your needs ?
Thank you for the interview. First of all, it is important to know that I have been a web developer/programmer for over 10 years, so I think like a nerd. In other words, when I look at things like Twitter and Facebook, I think about how the systems could be improved.
Secondly, I didn't start using Twitter or Facebook until about 18 months ago, so I'm fairly new to it.
After about the first three months of using Twitter, as I followed more and more programmers and nerds like me who tweeted mostly about stuff like programming, computer software, video games, and such I noticed three things:
- There is a lot of great, up-to-the-minute information on Twitter. That I liked!
- There is even more irrelevant information! For instance, I never understood the value of location apps like Foursquare, and I didn't see the need to know that someone just woke up and had crepes and orange juice for breakfast.
- To find the great information, I had to manually read and skip the irrelevant information. In my mind while I was reading my Twitter timeline, I thought to myself: skip, skip, skip, read about programming, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip, read about website design, skip, skip, etc. That was too much work for my small brain! "A computer should be doing the skipping for me", I thought.
I wanted to use Twitter to get valuable information for my job, without needing to do so much work. So, I decided that I wanted find a twitter service, app, or website that did the work of filtering for me. I looked all over and couldn't find what I really wanted. There are some APIs out there that let you do advanced searches and filters, but no User Interface. There are Twitter clients that do some basic filtering of up to 7 or 8 words. But I wanted more! I wanted to be able to filter my favorite 20 topics, be able to automatically filter out (skip) Foursquare and #FollowFriday tweets, and also be able to put similar filters on Facebook.
Which are the different phases to develop such a project ? You told me you did it on your own, I guess it made the process more difficult !
I started about 4 months ago, and since I'm a web developer I was able to put up a prototype for a few early Alpha testers to try within a couple of weeks after I started. My strategy has been to put my ideas up early and often, and to get feedback from real users. I use that feedback to make the product better, and to change Refynr into something that many people will understand and use on a regular basis. You can follow my progress from the beginning of Refynr.com on my blog: http://solowebstartup.com/?tag=refynr&page=5. Right now, the Alpha testing phase is coming to an end, and within weeks I hope to put up the Beta version of Refynr. That will include an improved interface, some bug fixes, and other small features. After a couple of months of Beta testing, I will release the 1.0 version and go from there.
It has been difficult to do this on my own, but I don't work as long or as hard as many other American entrepreneurs, to be honest. I try my best to work no more than 45 or 50 hours per week on Refynr, and that has been the average. I have a wife of 9 years, a 4 year old son, and a 9 month old daughter. I am committed to my family first.
I worked mainly in Austin, TX for the past 10 years, but had moved to The Netherlands for 2 years with my small family. After discovering that I wasn't doing the work I wanted to, even in Europe, I decided it was time to try a start-up business for once. I decided I could do most of the work myself because I now have enough knowledge and experience, I can pay for servers in the Rackspace Cloud pretty cheaply these days; and I wanted to be able to move fast without the restrictions and "red tape" of working with other people.
Is Refynr your only project, or did you create a firm to develop other apps ? And do you work full time on Refynr, or just as a hobby ? I work full-time on Refynr, but do some off-and-on contract work, part-time, for extra money. I'm using my life savings to pay for it so far, so it's much more than a hobby. I hope it makes me enough money that I can be my own boss for years to come.
· Is there any business model around Refynr, and what is it ?
I do not want to put ads on Refynr, because the whole point of Refynr is to get rid of stuff people don't want to see. So, I'm hoping people are willing to pay for it.
Sometime during the next few months of the Beta stage, I will start charging a small monthly fee, with probably a 15 day Trial period. I'm not a marketing or business person, as my background is mostly technical. I may need hire a marketing firm to help me for a while, but I will try to get as far as I can by myself.
However, just today a Twitter salesman called me to say that they would like me to help Beta test their new ad platform: Sponsored Tweets and Sponsored Accounts. It costs a least a few thousand dollars for 3 months, but I think I am going to do it to get more exposure for Refynr. So, I'm hoping that helps get more people to sign up. Refynr has nearly 400 users now, but I would like to have thousands of customers to make enough revenue to thrive and grow the business.
· What are your future projects, and will you work on further developments on Refynr ?
I don't have any separate projects planned for the future, only Refynr. Once I get a few thousand paying customers, I want to build a Pro version of Refynr for medium- and large-size businesses. They would pay per user, and Refynr would allow customers to set up company-wide filters that would restrict employees to seeing only certain topics on Twitter, Facebook, and possibly LinkedIn and RSS Feeds. I would consult with various businesses to find out what other features I could add to Refynr that would make it valuable to them.
· And eventually, which advice would you give to people wanting to create a service around Twitter ?
Hmmm, I don't know if I'm qualified to give much advice because I have only been doing this for about 5 months, and have no revenue to show for it. But I'll say that I feel good that my plan to get user feedback early and often has been working. Users tell me often that they like the progress I've been making and appreciate that I listen to them and do my best to implement their ideas. For Refynr, I've been trying hard to create something that is useful for me and people I know. If I can get that part right, then I hope more and more people will see the value of keeping the junk out of twitter without missing the stuff they care about.
Also, I think it's important in the long run that such as service is not solely tied to one Social Network like Twitter. Who knows? In a few years, Twitter could be replaced by something new. So, I have integrated Refynr with Twitter & Facebook to start with, but also have plans to integrate with other social networks, and will try to stay flexible if something else comes along.
